Trail Runs kick off Saturday, November 2nd, 2019
Each year from November through April, AREC members head to the hills around Southern California to pursue a truly unique running experience. We go to trailheads at State and Regional Parks throughout Orange County and L.A. for challenging and rewarding runs.
Trail runs take place on Saturday mornings at 8:00 a.m. (unless otherwise specified) just after a short trail briefing at 7:45 a.m. Trail leaders will review routes, maps, and provide gear and safety tips. Detailed information on trailhead parking, bathrooms, carpools, and maps will be posted weekly to the AREC Trail Running group on Facebook.
There are several routes offered each week that vary in level of difficulty and distance. At least one distance will always be targeted for the novice and/or shorter distance runner so that anyone can join trail runs on any given week.
First 2 Months of Trail Runs (Nov-Jan)
Training runs will be led by various members of the AREC Trail Runs Steering Committee. Our Trail Leaders are committed to orienting new trail runners to all trail basics, and will stay with runners no matter what pace to ensure that everyone is safe. The routes will be easy to navigate and the weekly mileage will be stable. Longer distances will still be provided for more experienced runners, and for those developing a “base” for any winter trail race training.
Last 4 Months of Trail Runs (Jan-Apr) – 2019 Trail Race training program begins on January 6, 2020!
AREC is committed to providing an experience for runners of all abilities so that routes will continue to be offered to support novice runners. Also, to improve all runners’ navigation skills and familiarity with different Parks, different routes will be scheduled from the same trailhead for 2 or more weeks in a row. And, for more experienced runners with a weekly mileage base, distances will be offered to support the 2020 AREC Trail Race training program. Our training program includes daily/weekly mileage geared to coincide with races in March 2020. Trail runs will be co-led by AREC Trail Runs Steering Committee members, and Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) certified coach, Jerry Narin, to ensure that participants receive the advice, motivation, and tools necessary to accomplish their trail racing goals. This training program is included with annual club membership, so sign up today!
All runners will find the trails to be a very enjoyable experience if they are prepared for them. Always bring plenty of water and fuel as it can get hot in the canyons… and follow the maps! Phones and/or GPS watches are also highly encouraged for safety and navigation.
